The Seasons
My original idea for the opening tracks for ‘Houses of the Holy’ was that a short overture would be a rousing instrumental introduction with layered electric guitars that would segue in to ’The Seasons’, later to be titled ‘The Rain Song’. Again there would be a contrasting acoustic guitar instrumental movement with melotron that could lead to the first vocal of the album and the first verse of the song.
‘The Seasons’ was a memo to myself as a reminder of the sequence of the song and various ideas I’d had for it in its embryonic stage. I’d worked on it over one evening at home. During the routining of the overture now titled ‘The Plumpton and Worcester Races’, the half time section was born and the overture shaped in to the song, ‘The Song Remains The Same’. These rehearsals were done in Puddle Town on the River Piddle in Dorset, UK.
The first set of recordings were done at Olympic Studios with George Chkiantz.
We then came to record at Stargroves, Sir Mick Jagger’s country home, and, like Headley Grange, with the Rolling Stones recording truck.
‘The Song Remains The Same’ was played on a Fender 12 string, the same one used on Becks Bolero, with my trusty Les Paul number 1 on overdubs in a standard turning. The ‘Rain Song’ was an unorthodox tuning on acoustic and electric guitars. On live shows, it became a work-out feature for the double neck.

I discovered Led Zeppelin back in December 2023. I was watching UA-cam and Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven from Madison Square Garden 1973 was in my “for you page.” I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve listen to all of their songs, and I love every single one of them. I just love that I can go into a completely different world when I listen to them. Every time I listen to Stairway to Heaven, I feel so many different emotions, and I get this intense feeling of butterflies in my stomach. It’s almost a spiritual experience to me. I just love it so much! It’s been a really rough time in my life recently, and the only way I feel at peace is if I listen to Zeppelin. So I want to thank you: Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and especially Jimmy Page for giving me this wonderful piece of art that is Led Zeppelin. I hope all of you live out the rest of your days in happiness and peace, and rip Bonzo! I really hope I get to meet you someday Jimmy, so I can thank you in person 💕 I really wish I was alive in the 70’s so I could see them in concert!
I had a similar experience to yours recently regarding Led Zeppelin. I don't know how old you are, I'm 71 and I was a kid when the overwhelming music of the 60s broke out. I followed it with passion but I had never followed LZ's hard rock, it wasn't up my alley. I knew they were the best, loved and followed, but their genre was too far from my tastes. Over time, I read some statistics, for example: which is the most loved band, which is the song of the century, which is the most appreciated guitar solo. The answer, in the majority of cases was: Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven, and Jimmy's solo in the same song. Intrigued, I checked on YT and it was like a bolt of lightning that hit me. I was hypnotized by this surprise, I wanted to delve deeper into their discography and their activity. How much I missed, but I'm catching up. They are all wonderful musicians but Jimmy's guitar particularly fascinates me, both when he plays hard and when he uses acoustics, as in this case. It is now a daily appointment with these old, immortal, enthralling notes.
I remember hearing the Rain Song on the radio as s kid in the seventies and being captivated.

The day is coming for all of us when we will stand before God, and the accuser will remind us of all the times we chose the path of sinfulness in our lives. He will show us just how unworthy we are of forgiveness. And as our souls fill with remorse and trembling he will offer us a choice; he will point out that we don’t have to subject ourselves to the Creator’s judgement; rather, we can go with him. He will promise us an eternity filled with our earthly desires and whatever sins and vices were our weaknesses in our earthly life. It is at this moment, knowing what we deserve, but remembering from somewhere that there IS the forgiveness of sins, that we must throw ourselves at God’s feet and implore His Mercy. His Mercy is all we’ll have going for us, but it’s all we’ll need. And if we do this, His Love will purify us and bring us to the eternal bliss that was intended for us from the beginning. Do not succumb to the fear and lies of the accuser. To run from God’s Mercy is to run to eternal damnation. None of us deserves forgiveness, or an eternity of peace, joy, and love that God wants to give us. But the choice will be there for us. Trust Him; He loves us countless times more than anyone has in our earthly lives. Remember this.

I cant even tell you how wonderful it is to hear this. The hour long recording of the JP’s demo experimenting & noodling about with the pieces of this song before narrowing down are among the most beautiful in my entire music collection and ive always dreamed of hearing him put longer/expanded or just instrumental version out to just soak in these melodies, harmonies & lush sounds. So many Zep tracks are like this, i wish there were an “in the studio” package for musicians to listen to, with no focus on the finished song, just 100% on all the making of.
